How To Sew A Throw Pillow Cover
If you’re a beginner at sewing, this is the perfect tutorial for you. Simple shapes with straight lines can be among the best ways to gain experience cutting material and using a sewing machine. That’s exactly what we’re going to do in this guide on how to sew a throw pillow cover.
I had a lot of fun with this tutorial and I love the way it turned out.
Choose a modern, funky, and unique material to create a DIY throw pillow cover that is eye-catching and beautiful.
I’ve also recorded a step-by-step video which you can watch below.
With that being said, let’s get started!
Supplies
Here’s what you’ll need to complete this throw pillow cover tutorial:
- X amount of material depending on the length and width of the pillow. This tutorial used 53 cm x 53 cm of material.
- Pins
- Cotton (a suitable color that matches the material)
- Press-studs (2 to 4)
- Measuring tape
- Scissor
- Sewing machine
- Overlocker (optional)
Instructions

Find a pillow and remove the pre-existing cover. We’ll work with the pillow itself so that I can show you how to measure and cut enough material to sew a cover that fits.

Fold your material over, with the right side facing up. Place the pillow along the center, allowing a 5cm gap between each side.

Cut the material along the side where the material meets.

Measure the cutting to ensure that there’s a 5cm gap on all four sides of the pillow cover.

Turn one side over until the reverse is facing towards you.

Add pins along the 5cm gap on either side of the pillow cover. The fold will not need to be sewn. Do not pin the material opposite the fold because we will be using press studs.

Using a simple straight stitch, sew both sides of the pillow cover starting from the fold working your way up where each pin is inserted.

Remove pins as you stitch and ensure that you are sewing the cover in a straight line. Gently guide the material with your left hand as the machine stitches.

Once you’ve stitched both sides of the pillow cover, overlock or use a zig zag stitch along the ends for reinforcement.

Once the sides have been sewn, your pillow cover will have structure and shape. At that point, turn over the material until the correct side is visible to you.

Now, we’re going to complete a double fold-hem along the opening of the pillow cover.

Fold over the ends by 2cm and then fold it over again by another 2cm.

Place the fold into the sewing machine and begin to sew.

As you stitch the double fold-hem, continue the process of folding it over twice as you work your way along the material and keep stitching until the entire section has been hemmed.

Place the pillow inside the cover and make sure that it fits.

Select where you would like to insert press-studs and begin to tack them on. I used 3 of them, one on each end and one press stud along the center of the pillow cover. But, you can use as many as you want, with a minimum of 2 on either side.

Once the press-studs have been sewing onto the pillow cover, open and close them to make sure that they are aligned correctly and that it’s holding the pillow inside the cover.

Congratulations!
