Kindle Cover Tutorial (Using An Old Pair Of Jeans)

If you’re a fan of the Kindle reader and want to create a custom and stylish cover or case, I have the perfect tutorial for you. I found an old pair of jeans that no longer fit (sigh), and instead of letting them fray or go to waste, I repurposed them for a few sewing projects. Using the denim from one leg, I designed and sewed this denim Kindle cover with an envelope flap.

The benefit of using denim to sew a Kindle cover is the fabric thickness. It will provide extra protection from damage caused by falls or liquid spills.

It took me less than 20 minutes to complete this Kindle cover tutorial, and it’s simple enough for beginners to enjoy.

Step 1: Measure and draft

To start this tutorial, let’s draft the Kindle cover and the flap on paper. Place the Kindle on a plain white page or tracing paper and leave a 0.5 cm or 1 cm allowance on all four sides of the case.

Most Kindles are approximately the size of an A5 book. Mark all four sides and sketch.

For the flap, find the center point of the top line, choose a height of your preference, and connect that point to either end of the top line. Sketch the triangle that will be used as a flap.

Step 2: Cut the material

Fold one jeans leg in half and cut the denim material. Then, using the fold line, cut the leg of the jeans open. Fold it in half again, and place the draft of the Kindle cover on the material. Use a pin to secure the paper to the material and cut.

Repeat this process with the triangle flap, and remember to account for the allowance when cutting.

Step 3: Stitch the flap

Now we can move on to stitching the case. I began with the flap, but you can begin with the case itself. Sew one end of the triangle flap, turn it over onto the right side using the unstitched portion, and then close the other end with a straight stitch.

Stitch a seam line to make it appear neat and cohesive.

Step 4: Attach the flap

Before stitching the case, we will attach the flap to one end. Remove the pattern cutting from the case and open it out. Once open, place the triangle flap on one side and stitch until it is attached with a 0.5 cm seam.

Be sure to stitch the flap onto the correct side of the material.

Then, use an overlocking stitch to neaten and tighten the edge of the flap that has been attached.

Step 5: Stitch a double-fold

On the bottom end of the denim material for the case, create a double-fold and stitch on the wrong side.

Step 6: Fold over and stitch

Fold the material in half until the end that was stitched with a double fold meets the other end where the flap has been attached. The wrong side of the material should be facing you. Align and sew one side with a straight stitch.

Repeat until the other side has been sewn. Thereafter, use an overlocking stitch and sew both ends again.

Step 7: Reverse and stitch the flap down

Now that both sides have been stitched, reverse the Kindle case using the opening to reveal the correct side. Then, stitch the inside of the flap down until you get a neat finish.

Step 8: Attach elastic and button

sew a button onto the kindle cover

Measure and cut a piece of elastic, fold it to create a bow and then attach it to the inside of the flap along the tip of the triangle.

Once attached, grab a needle and cotton to tack on the button on the Kindle case to complete this tutorial.

Complete!

With that final step, you should be holding your very own denim Kindle cover made from an old pair of jeans!

Not only does it look stylish but the thickness of denim will add an extra layer of protection for your Kindle.

This turned out fantastic and I love it.
